The VPRO and writer Geert Mak, travel through Europe and European history, again. The new series picks up where the previous one ended: in 1999. Optimism at the turn of the century gave way to fear and confusion after the attacks on the Twin Towers, the credit crunch, an increasing influx of refugees and an increasingly poor relationship with Russia.

After the successful soundtrack of In Europa back in 2006, Big Orange and VPRO teamed up again to compose a tailormade soundtrack consisting of over 75 tracks of unique music for the new series.
