Traingineers
At Big Orange, sound is at the core of every experience. In the Traingineers XR app, we used sound design, AI-generated voices, and music to help create an immersive digital world. The Traingineers XR app, created for Meta, is a mixed-reality game designed to teach teenagers physics through fun, interactive experiences. Players can build and manage a virtual railway system that blends with their real surroundings, combining physical spaces with digital elements. Available on Meta Quest 2, 3, and Pro, the game encourages users to design complex train networks while learning key physics concepts along the way.
The challenge
Our challenge was to create sound for Traingineers that could match the game's impressive visuals. Since players interact with both digital and real-world spaces, the sound had to connect these two environments smoothly. Our job was to make the virtual trains and landscapes feel like they were actually in the player’s home, whether on the floor or the kitchen counter.
We focused on creating realistic sounds that adapted to the player's surroundings, making the game feel more real. We also used AI to create a voice that would guide players through the game, making it easy and fun to follow along. Finally, we composed music that changed with the gameplay, adding excitement without distracting from the learning experience.
The result
Using a mix of technology and sound design, we created an audio experience that fits perfectly with the world of Traingineers. The sound design made the virtual trains feel real, from the hum of the engines to the noise of the wheels on the tracks. The AI voice guides the players through the game, helping them navigate the physics challenges more easily. And the music we composed added to the excitement, changing with the gameplay to match the player's progress.
In the end, the sound, voice, and music all worked together to make Traingineers more engaging and immersive. Players don’t just build their train empire—they can hear and feel it too.
